Is your law firm lagging behind in terms of digital skills and online presence? You’re not alone. According to a recent survey reported in The Times, more than half of Scottish small businesses do not have a website and do not use social media to promote their business. With 56% of Scottish businesses having no online presence, and 34% of companies believing that a digital presence is simply ‘not relevant’ to their business, the Scottish economy is facing a massive digital skills deficit – one which could dictate which business thrive and which simply disappear.
Here at Moore Legal Technology we regularly help law firms that struggle with digital marketing. Although many of our clients have readily embraced the internet and now have a robust and prestigious online presence, a large volume of the firms we take on are starting from the beginning. Having been in the business of helping firms thrive online since the early noughties, we have seen digital marketing go from ‘fad’ to ‘essential’ in the minds of law firm decision makers. There is no doubt about it, law firms that wish to grow or even survive must start winning business where their customers are – online.
Build your online presence, grow your business.
The most commonly cited reason amongst small businesses being reluctant to embrace technology was ‘lack of digital skills’ amongst team members. Almost half of all respondents to the survey stated that neither they, nor their employee had the ability to use online tools.
However, firms in this position must recognize that investing in digital training, and/or in an external agency to help them grow their business online is one that will pay off exponentially. In fact, earlier this month the Bank of Scotland Digital index highlighted that 71 per cent of businesses that had invested in growing their online presence had found that it saved them time, with 56 per cent noting that it reduced their costs overall. This isn’t even taking into account the business that can be won by expanding their presence online.
