When customer No 1. approached me to help his firm with search engine optimisation and online marketing in the early noughties I wasn't all that keen. I had built many websites before and had also been involved in a number of search engine optimisation projects but I wasn't sure if designing, constructing and maintaining websites was where my future lay. There were already a lot of companies out there in the marketplace and I didn't know what I could do differently.
The potential customer contact, who was an old friend from University, was fairly insistent and basically said that the difference would be my own legal experience. He had engaged an SEO agency who knew about SEO but they knew nothing about the law and as such he was finding it hard to get them to understand his business.
He then told me that he was paying the other agency £650 a month. I considered this for a nanosecond and said I'd do it.
I brushed up both my SEO knowledge and also brushed up on conversion techniques and set about redesigning, rewriting and re-optimising his site. Soon after launch the rankings improved and the enquiries started flowing through the site. It was at this point that I realised that what I was being asked to deliver was actually new business - not a website, or better rankings etc. These were means to an end.
The timing of this initial foray coincided with the financial crash and suddenly lawyers were having to look closely at ways of generating business. Flush with the success of project No.1 I set up meeting with other contacts and began to get more customers 'generating business online'.
Here are the things I realised at that time:
- Generating business online is not actually all that hard but in order to do it one has to be really thorough
- Getting content from lawyers was a pain in the backside and as the content was needed to make the projects work I decided that we should write all of the content
- For the site to work one has to put in three months of full on work and make sure that when the site is launched it is 100% right.
- Ongoing effort is required on content, SEO and technical updates.
